An Tochar History PDF Print E-mail

Causeway Comhaltas is a traditional Irish club operating for the last 50 years sowing the seeds of Irish music and dance in its local community by taking part in events during the year and hosting similar gatherings where traditional music and dance is part of the community.

Causeway branch of Comhaltas was formed for the first time at a meeting which was held in Kate Leen's house in Causeway on December 19th 1960 with just an oil lamp for light.

Officers elected were;
President: Rev. Fr Curran C.C.
Chairman: Seamus Hussey
Vice Chairman: John Lyons
Secretary: Denis McCarthy
Treasurer: Richard Casey
P.R.O.: Dick Keane
Delegates to County Board: Seamus Hussey and Denis McCarthy.

Mr Jer Keane attended the meeting as a Representative of County Board. The branch continued for a few years during which time as a means of raising funds, a Ceili Band was formed called the Shannon Ceili Band. They were a great success and played at many Ceili's. Members of the Band were Denis McCarthy, Dr Michael Sweeney, Martin Browne, Richard Casey, Seamus Hussey, Liam & Harry Power, Jerry Flaherty, Harry O'Sullivan & Paddy McElliott. However the branch ceased to exist in 1965 but was resurrected again in early 70's by Nelius Carmody and his wife Kay amongst others. Kay & Nelius started dance classes and got very involved in set and reel competitions.  The band has carried on to this day with different Officers and Committee from time to time.
